Intravitreal injection is one of the procedures that we can perform in our office. It is done to treat age related macular degeneration, diabetic macular disease, retinal vascular occlusions. Initially, the procedure needs to be repeated on a monthly bases and then less often. It is performed under a local anaesthetic.

Macular degeneration effects older people. Initially, it can cause distortions when looking at straight lines and then progressive loss of central vision. It is painless and gradual, but it can be sudden when an abnormal blood vessel starts bleeding. Smoking and family history are some of the risk factors.

Diabetes, if not controlled well, can also lead to loss of vision in any age group. High blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in the whole body, including the eye. They easily bleed and leak fluid, which accumulates in the macula.

Other retinal vascular conditions, including central retinal vein occlusion and branch retinal vein occlusion, affect macula as well. They are usually associated with high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol levels.

Not every macular condition can be treated with the intravitreal injection, so if you are experiencing any vision problems, or noticed any distortions, you should have your eyes assessed.
